One cube that lasts, or a set that sorts the bag
Updated September 21, 2026 · Peak Design dimensions from the brand’s medium cube spec. Veken contents from the Amazon listing. Not a mileage test.
Buy one Peak Design medium if you want a single cube with a clean/dirty divider and a compression zipper, at about 5.1 ounces. Buy the Veken six-set if the suitcase is still a pile and you need small, medium, large, and extra-large at once.

What a cube is for
A packing cube does not create liters. A 46-liter carry-on is still 46 liters. The cube does two smaller jobs that are the whole point. It keeps Tuesday’s shirt from living under Friday’s jeans. And it turns a soft pile into a rectangle the suitcase can actually close around.
Compression is the feature people overbuy. Zipping a cube down makes soft clothes smaller. It does not change the airline’s weight rule, and a cube crushed past the point where it fits back through the suitcase opening has not helped. Compress until the rectangle is firm. Stop when the zipper is a fight.
The one cube
Peak Design’s medium is the buy when you already sort your bag and you are tired of cubes whose zippers die. The brand’s spec for the medium:
| Compressed | 12.6 × 12.6 × 3.1 in, about 8 L |
|---|---|
| Expanded | 12.6 × 12.6 × 6.7 in, about 18 L |
| Weight | About 5.1 oz |
| Layout | Moving divider, so one side can be the clothes you can still wear |
| Zipper | Compression zipper plus a second opening |
Eighteen liters expanded is a large share of a 46-liter carry-on. One medium holds the bulk of a few days of ordinary clothes. It does not hold the shoes, the toiletry bag, and the sweater. That is why “a set of Peak Design cubes” gets expensive fast, and why the set below exists.

The set
The Veken six-piece compression set is the buy when you want the whole suitcase labeled. The listing is six cubes: one small, two medium, two large, one extra-large, in polyester with a mesh panel and a compression zipper. Small takes socks and underwear. Medium takes shirts. Large takes jeans. Extra-large takes the sweater you were going to wear on the plane and then didn’t.
You will not use all six on a weekend. You will use four of them on a week in the Maxlite, and the other two stay home. That is still the right kit if your current method is “everything in the suitcase.” A single excellent cube does not fix a pile. A set does.

How to load a carry-on with either one
- One cube, one clothing type. Mixing socks into the jeans cube is how you unpack the bag in the dark.
- The heaviest cube sits on the wheel end of the suitcase, not against the lid.
- Leave shoes out of the clothing cubes. A shoe bag, even a thin one, keeps the tread off the shirts.
- Give wet things their own cube. On a beach-and-city trip like our Old San Juan long weekend, the swim cube stays sealed away from the walking-day clothes.
- If the suitcase will not close, take something out. Do not win the argument with the compression zipper and then lose it at the gate.
Questions people ask before they buy
Do cubes let me bring more?
They let you use the liters you already paid for, and they let you find one thing. Compression shrinks soft clothes. It does not raise a weight limit.
How big is the Peak Design medium?
About 12.6 inches square. Roughly 3.1 inches and 8 liters when compressed, 6.7 inches and 18 liters when expanded. About 5.1 ounces.
What comes in the Veken set?
Six compression cubes: small, two medium, two large, extra-large. Mesh so you can see which cube is which without opening all of them.
Which do I buy first?
One Peak Design medium if the bag is already organized and you want the cube itself to be good. The Veken set if the bag is not organized at all.
