The carry-on that stays a carry-on
Updated September 21, 2026 · Specs from Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 product page. Not a mileage test.
Buy the Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-inch spinner if the job is one week in a soft bag that is light before you put anything in it. Travelpro lists it at 5.4 pounds and 46 liters. Case body 21 × 14 × 9 inches. Overall, wheels and handles included, 23 × 14.5 × 9 inches.

The number that gets bags gate-checked
American, Delta, and United commonly publish a carry-on limit of 22 × 14 × 9 inches. The Maxlite 5’s packing body is inside that. The number Travelpro prints for the whole spinner, wheels and carry handles included, is 23 inches tall. Travelpro says the bag is sizer-bin tested for most major U.S. airlines and that it fits the sizers those airlines actually use. That is the honest version of “it fits.” It is not a promise that every regional jet, every basic-economy fare, or every strict agent will agree.
The expansion zipper is the part people get wrong. It adds up to 2 inches. Travelpro says a fully expanded carry-on may not meet airline restrictions. Pack it closed. Open the zipper at the hotel, or at the gate only after you can see an empty bin. An expanded Maxlite is how a carry-on becomes a checked bag you did not pay for in advance.

Forty-six liters is a real week if clothes are folded into cubes and shoes sit against the wheel housing. That is the bag shape we use for a three-day Kyoto cluster: cubes for layers, shoes against the wheels, expansion closed. It is not a week of boots, a coat, and a laptop bag stuffed in on top. The bag has exterior pockets, a full-length interior lid pocket, and a side accessory pocket. It is not a briefcase. If the laptop needs its own padded sleeve, put the sleeve in the bag. Do not assume this suitcase is that sleeve.
Who should skip it
- You want a hard shell. The Maxlite 5 is fabric. A hard shell is the right call for a camera cube or anything you do not want sat on. You will pay for that in empty weight.
- Your airline measures the whole spinner and stops at 22 inches. This bag’s published overall height is 23 inches. Read that carrier’s page before you buy, especially for international and low-cost flights.
- You pack by unzipping “just in case.” The expansion is useful at the hotel and risky at the gate.
How to pack the 46 liters
- Shoes and the dense stuff go in first, against the wheel end, so the bag stands.
- Clothes go in packing cubes, one cube for tops, one for bottoms. A single cube that fills the lid is how you end up unpacking the whole bag for a shirt.
- Toiletries stay in a bag that can survive a leak. The Maxlite is not a dry bag.
- The power bank rides in the cabin with you anyway. Do not bury the only battery in a bag you might be forced to check.
- Weigh the packed bag at home. The empty weight is 5.4 pounds. The airline limit, when there is one, is on the contents plus the bag.
Questions people ask before they buy
Does it fit American, Delta, and United?
Travelpro sizer-tests it for most major U.S. airlines. Those carriers still publish 22 × 14 × 9, and this spinner’s overall height is 23 inches including wheels. Fly with the expansion closed. A full bin or a strict agent can still send it to the hold.
Should I use the expansion?
After you are in the room, yes. On the way to the sizer, no. Two extra inches is the difference between a carry-on and a checked bag.
How heavy is it empty?
5.4 pounds, per Travelpro, at 46 liters. That is the reason to buy this one instead of a cheaper bag that is already 8 or 9 pounds before a shirt goes in.
Is it a hard shell?
No. Softside. Buy it because it is light and it rolls. Buy something else if you need a rigid box.
